(3:38) In thinking about how to frame today's piece, I went through ideas like "hangover music", "hold music from hell"...it's a Percy Faith tune, clipped from WLW's aircheck of November 22, 1963. Yep, if you were one of the first to hear the President was shot, and you turned on your radio, this is the sort of soothing/sinister music you heard while they figured out how to tell people Jack Kennedy was dying in the ER at Parkland Hospital. Presented in all its low-fi glory (I'm guessing, recorded open reel at 1 & 7/8 ips).

It required a little editing-- they kept playing it over and over, with interruptions, President shot, blah blah blah, that kind of thing. It's creepy enough to come up in some other use later, perhaps. Here it is now, anyway, in the context of 2011 slipping away with all the other years since then.

(3:19) The Sleeping Poet is what happens when I'm waiting for sleep, and the earplugs I'm wearing create a kind of speech-center feedback from the blood pounding in my ears. Or something like that.

This piece consists of an attempt to create a poetry from the resulting phrases, chopped up via an Excel spreadsheet, in the spirit of William S. Burrough's pioneering work. Listening back to it, maybe I sound a little too "announce"-y. But I want to do more with this kind of found sound, and this bit is an introduction to the idea.

(3:36) Here's an oldie. Jennings almost caught it-- "There is an absolutely, utterly macabre nature to all this"-- he might have had a sense of just how sick the whole thing was, and what it said about the rot of the Fourth Estate.

We had yet to go through the Schiavo Circus, Monicagate, the Patriotic Invasion of Iraq, John Kerry War-Coward, the Bank's Blackmail, etc...but June 17, 1994, when the greatest collection of "news" resources in the world went overboard in a scene out of "Farenheit 451", should be commemorated as the day the national press irretrievably turned into "info-tainment." Anyone expecting substance, the kind of information we need to be informed citizens of a democracy, can forget it.

Not that it was ever a priority in the first place. Reuven Frank, the former head of NBC news, once put it very clearly. The TV audience, he said, thinks they're the customers. They're not. The advertisers are the customers. The audience is the product-- they're what's delivered to the buyer. (Preferably, as ignorant and disoriented as possible, so they're more likely to want whatever's being peddled to them.)

(5:02) If you told Paul Frees he was one of the greatest voice-men of all time, he would undoubtedly reply in a mocking and velvety baritone, “One of the greatest?” His opinion would be borne out by his tremendous body of work—he was certainly the hardest working, with over 300 movie, cartoon and TV credits in a career spanning 40 years, as well as hundreds of commercials, radio programs and movie trailers. He also wrote scripts and songs, directed, and was a talented painter.

His range ran from Orson Welles to Poppin’ Fresh the Pillsbury Doughboy, to the Ghostly Host of Disneyland's Haunted House. He was everywhere on Old time Radio and Saturday morning cartoon shows. The source tape for this was made back in the '90s, and he seemed like a good candidate for the old C&P. But it ended up being like a fractal: no matter how it was cut and pasted, his message couldn't be made any more obnoxious than it already was. So, I'm not sure if this piece attained its full potential-- there may be more work ahead on the source.
